Led by the internationally famed historian and author Dr. Rosie Llewellyn- Jones, FRAS, this tour is a wonderful walk down the memory lane to look at the life and times of the British Raj in colonial India.
It will be a fascinating journey of discovery visiting some of the significant sites of the era. History will come alive, with Rosie and distinguished guest speakers, giving enthralling insights with lectures and visits. The visit will include the Bengal Club, positively oozing with colonial grandeur, the poignant Residency in Lucknow and tea will be taken with the Nawab of Lucknow.
Other visits include Kolkata to get an overview of the British rule, followed by Lucknow with its haunting echoes of the Indian Uprising, then visit Agra with its wonderful fort and immortal Taj Mahal before a tour of the main places of interest in Delhi.

Depart from London Heathrow and regional UK airports on Emirates Airlines flight to Kolkata via Dubai.
11 October 2010 Kolkata – Evening lecture
Arrive Kolkata and transfer direct to the Fairlawn Hotel, an old colonial bungalow. Remainder of day to relax before evening lecture by Soumitra Das on the colourful city - capital of the British Raj. 4 nights the Fairlawn Hotel Kolkata.
12 October 2010 Kolkata – Half day excursion
An intriguing insight into the foundations of British rule. Visits will include St. John’s Church, to see painting by Johann Zoffany and the grave of Job Charnock, founder of Calcutta. Drive past the Writers’ Buildings and the Law Courts. Visit the Victoria Memorial including the Gallery of Company paintings and stop off at South Park Street, the 18th century European cemetery. Remainder of day at leisure.
13 October 2010 Kolkata - Full day excursion
Delightful morning boat ride on the River Hooghly to Barrackpore, the country residence of the Viceroy. Visit the Calcutta Botanical Gardens, established in 1787 by Captain Robert Kyd, and see the world’s largest banyan tree. Dinner at Bengal Club.
14 October 2010 Kolkata - Full day excursion
Spend time in Chowringhee, the College Street bookshops and, New Market (still known as Hog Market). Later visit Belvedere House at Alipore, former official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. Step back in time again and wander the Calcutta Golf Club. Visit Subhas Chandra Bose Museum at Elgin Road.
15 October 2010 To Lucknow – Evening lecture
Fly to Lucknow and transfer to the Taj Residency. Later visit the famous bookshop of Ram Advani. Tea with H H Raja Jehagirabad. Evening lecture by Rosie Llewellyn-Jones. 3 nights Taj Residency Lucknow.
16 October 2010 Lucknow – Highlights of the city
A tour of the Residency with its poignant reminders of the siege. Also see the Bara Imambara and Hussainabad Imambara. Visit La Martiniere College, posthumously founded by Major General Claude Martin, and the only school in the world to hold a Battle Honour. Take tea with the Nawab Jafar Mir Abdulla and taste the local delight - Namash - learn first hand about the lifestyle of the ‘fabled Nawabs’.
17 October 2010 Old Lucknow – Market visits
No visit to India is complete without shopping! Visit the Nakkas market and Chowk. Rest of the day at leisure with optional visit to ruins of Dilkusha Palace, Sikanderbagh, site of a mutiny battle and/or Qaisarbagh Palace.
18 October 2010 To Agra
Take the train to Agra. Transfer to the Gateway Hotel Agra. Remainder of day at leisure. Two nights Agra.
19 October 2010 Agra - Taj Mahal and Red Fort
Dawn visit to see one of the world’s immortal icons – The Taj Mahal - sun kissed a blushing rose in the dawns first rays. After breakfast visit the Red Fort with its delightful mix of architectural styles. Remainder of day at leisure.
20 October 2010 To Delhi - Evening lecture
Travel from Agra to Delhi visiting Sikandra enroute from to Delhi. Transfer to the Maidens Hotel. Remainder of day at leisure before an evening lecture by Mahmood Farooqui. 3 nights Maidens Hotel Delhi.
21 October 2010 Morning excursion Old Delhi
Morning excursion to discover the many faces of Old Delhi. Visits include: Coronation Park, the site of the 1911 Delhi Durbar. Kashmiri Gate and St James’s Church (Skinner’s Church). The site of the old British magazine, The Red Fort and the Jama Masjid. Remainder of day at leisure.
22 October 2010 Half day excursion New Delhi
Visits include India Gate (the war memorial to Indian soldiers who died fighting for the British in the First World War), Parliament House and the Secretariat buildings. Shopping at Santushti shopping complex / Dilli Haat/ Cottage Industries, then relax and enjoy tea at the Imperial Hotel.
23 October 2010 Return to UK
Depart Delhi via Dubai to UK on Emirates Airlines flights.
