Sri Lanka has been known throughout the years by many romantic names – Taprobane, Serendib, Ceylon and even Pa-Outchow. Nevertheless one thing remains constant: no matter the name - the breathtaking beauty and diversity of this small island – the Tear Drop in the Indian Ocean – is incomparable.
Sri Lanka is unique. From culture vultures to nature lovers and laid-back sun-worshipers there’s something for everyone. The small island is so accessible, travellers, can comfortably journey from the sun drenched golden sands of the coast, to the rolling hills of the interior, with its high wild plateaux and dense forests, to explore all the many faces of this green and verdant land.
The Cultural Triangle resplendent with ancient Buddhists sites includes the Royal City and Palace in Polonnaruwa, the Jethwana and Abhayagiri Monastery complex in Anuradhapura and the amazing caves of Dambulla with their sensitive paintings.
Up in the hills, the old capital of Kandy, with its man made lake, is home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth and the superb Peridenia Botanical gardens. From there it’s easy drive to Pinnawela to see the delightful Elephant Orphanage.
Higher up still, in the ‘Hill Country’, Nuwara Eliya, with its colonial elegance, is reminiscent of an English country town with mock Tudor facades and red brick walls. The area is surrounded by rolling hills wreathed by an emerald green cloak of tea plantations.
For the nature lover Sri Lanka is pure heaven with National Reserves teeming with wildlife including leopard, langur and elephant. Bird lovers will not be disappointed with over 26 endemic species including the elusive green billed coucals and blue magpies. Visits should include Horton Plains, Minneriya, Yala and the Sinharaja Rain Forest.
There’s also a lot of pampering going on in Sri Lanka with wonderful relaxing spas and traditional Ayurvedic centres, offering everything from a sybaritic massage to intensive therapy.
Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy some of the best surf in the world; rock climb, white water raft, dive, trek or play on a diverse selection of golf courses.
