Jordan
|
Jordan offers real diversity for a small country. Sandwiched between Syria in the North, Saudi Arabia to the South and the West Bank to the West the country is a beacon of stability in the region. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a modern Arab state and the King is the head of state. Many civilisations have ruled but perhaps the most memorable are the Nabataeans, who dominated the trade routes and made Petra their home. Today the capital is Amman. A modern city providing a great base to explore the country including the citadel of Amman and its Amphitheatre, The Roman City of Jerash and the Castles of the Eastern desert. As well as the many historical sites there are many natural wonders. The Rift Valley is home to the stunning nature reserves of Mujib and Dana as well as The Dead Sea. Azray in the eastern desert is an ancient Oasis. There are unique nature reserves in the area, which are a haven for migratory birds and rare desert species including the Onagers, a species of Wild Ass. The most famous natural feature in Jordan is Wadi Rum, immortalised by the British officer T. E. Lawrence and home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the Middle East. |
