Green tourism and responsible travel are key concerns for Indus. All tours are designed to give guests a taste of the real India, Nepal and Bhutan - without compromising the environment. As a member of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO): www.aito.co.uk, Travel Operators for Tigers (TOFT): www.toftigers.org and, a partner in the Spiti project: www.spiti.org. Indus is committed to working hard to help sustain local ecological initiatives and to ensure a sustainable tourism policy.
Indus also works extensively with local charities such as Whiteladies Heath-Share Project and The Palm Tree Foundation, to help raise funds, by offering holidays as prizes.
AITO is the first tourism industry association to incorporate into its business charter a commitment to Responsible travel and green tourism. Sustainable travel guidelines for its members based upon 5 key objectives: • To protect the environment – its flora, fauna and landscapes • To respect local cultures – traditions, religions and built heritage • To benefit local communities – both economically and socially • To conserve natural resources – from office to destination • To minimise pollution – through noise, waste disposal and congestion
Founded by a group of concerned Tour Operators, TOFT has now expanded to become a pioneering International ‘collective action’ campaign, run by Travel Professionals, aimed at those within the nature travel industry and all visitors to India’s wildlife parks, to advocate, endorse and support more responsible use of wilderness areas in India, and the Indian sub continent.
The Spiti Valley is a remote area high in the Himalayas situated on the Tibetan plateau with almost no rain and snow-covered for 8 months a year. Although originally Tibetan, it's been part of India since the mid 19th century and virtually closed off from the World for most of the last 50 years. The Spiti Project's mission is to improve the quality of life for Tibetan communities living in the Spiti Valley by working with the local people to promote health care, education and their unique cultural heritage.
